Dec 5 2022 Workshop Details

Speaker : Dharik S. Mallapragada

Webinar topic : Electricity Sector Decarbonisation in India

Date and time : Monday, 5 Dec, 2022 18:30 | (UTC+05:30) Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi

Speaker details

Dharik S. Mallapragada is a Principal Research Scientist at the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI), where his research focuses on developing advanced decision-support tools for planning and operating resilient, low-carbon energy systems as well as design and integration of novel energy technologies.

Prior to MIT, Dharik spent nearly five years in the energy and petrochemicals industry working on a range of sustainability-focused research topics, including conversion of biomass to fuels and chemicals, low-carbon hydrogen production, and developing optimization-based tools for energy infrastructure planning, as well as process and product design.

Dharik’s research contributions include over 35 peer-reviewed publications across a spectrum of journals and development of open-source software such as the GenX model, a tool for planning low-carbon electricity systems.

More recently, Dharik’s research has focused on exploring the role for hydrogen in low-carbon energy systems, for which he has developed models to study coordinated planning of electricity and hydrogen infrastructure and also used them to study the potential role for emerging technologies like long-duration energy storage and liquid hydrogen carriers. He serves as a member of the Massachusetts Commission on Clean Heat, on the advisory committee for the Open Energy Outlook project as well as a thrust lead for Center for decarbonizing chemical manufacturing using Sustainable Electrification. Dharik holds a M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University and a B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India.

Speaker : Andrew P. Jones

Webinar topic : Simulating Grounded Hope: the En-ROADS Climate Workshop

Date and time : Tuesday, Dec 6, 2022 6:30 pm | (UTC+05:30) Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi

Speaker details

Andrew (Drew) Jones is Co-Founder and Co-Director of Climate Interactive. An expert on international climate and energy issues, his quotes and data stories appear frequently in the New York Times, The Washington Post, and other media.

Jones and his team at CI and MIT Sloan developed “C-ROADS”, the climate simulation that was used by John Holdren, Jonathan Pershing, and John Kerry in advance of the Copenhagen and Paris climate summits. Ahead of the recent passage of US climate legislation, his team engaged 128 members of the US Congress with the En-ROADS simulator.

Trained in system dynamics modeling at Dartmouth College and through a M.S. at MIT, Jones has worked at Rocky Mountain Institute and served dozens of clients ranging from the CDC to Harley-Davidson Motor Company.

Jones co-accepted the System Dynamics Society’s award for the best real-world application of modeling. He won Dartmouth College’s Ray W. Smith award for the most significant contribution to the status of the College.

Simulating Grounded Hope: the En-ROADS Climate Workshop

Jones will lead the “En-ROADS Climate Workshop”, created with MIT Sloan, which uses the decision-maker-oriented En-ROADS computer simulation to help a group explore system-wide global solutions to climate change, including renewable energy, oil policy, less deforestation, carbon removal, energy efficiency, population, coal taxes, carbon pricing, electrification and other policies.

The model was built by Climate Interactive and MIT Sloan and has been used in settings ranging from the US Congress to the U.N. Secretary-General’s climate team to the HSBC bank.
