About The Energy Consortium – IIT Madras

Introduction

  • The IIT Madras Energy Consortium has been formed to leverage the institute’s expertise to accelerate decarbonization of Indian industry’s energy systems.
  • The Consortium is part of the Office of Global Engagement and draws upon past and current work done by our faculty in many domains & disciplines, and enables transfer of our research expertise to match Indian industry’s needs.
  • The consortium has active participation from more than 50 IIT Madras Faculty from multiple disciplines, with significant technology expertise and demonstrated contributions on the world stage. In addition, we have over 250 postgraduate students (PhD and MS) and about 25 plus post-doctoral fellows working in various domains related to energy.

  • A budget of Rs 1000 crores (135 million) alloted for a period of five years to develop and offer to Indian and global markets innovative and high-impact solutions

Key objectives

The consortium would be a strategic partner to help incubate and groom technology that is in the discovery and feasibility stages and to assist those in the pilot demonstration levels through use case scenario validations and techno-economic studies geared to understand scaling and commercialization aspects. The idea is to enhance and accelerate R&D efforts of the consortium members on topics of mutual interest/ benefit by partnering with IITM.

The three broad outcomes envisaged by the consortium will be

  • Stakeholder engagement, encouraging responsible choices for energy solutions
  • Methodologies for transparent and clear metrics such as achieving reduction in GHG emissions and addressing the sustainable development goals overall
  • Preparing future leaders with diverse perspectives, who would be capable of navigating the cultural rewiring that comes about from a sustainable energy dominated future
